The runners approach the home straight in the Olympiastadion, Munich, West Germany. From left to right, the USAs Ralph Mann (#998), the USAs James Seymour (#1013), Great Britains David Hemery (#288) USSRs Yuri Zorin (#967), and the USSRs Yevgeny Gavrilenko (#934).
Mann won the silver medal, Hemery the bronze, while Seymour was fourth, Gavrilenko tied sixth and Zorin eighth. Ugandas gold medal winner John Akii-Bua is so far ahead even at this stage in the race that he is not in the shot
