EDITORS COMMENTS
This fresco, titled "Procris impaled by the never erring javelin, Cephalus running towards her and Aurora and Titone on a chariot pulled by four horses" transports us to the enchanting Villa Farnesina in Rome. Painted by Baldassarre Peruzzi and his workshop between 1517-18, this masterpiece is part of The Hall of Perspectives. In this particular detail, we witness the tragic scene of Procris lying lifeless on the ground with a spear piercing her chest. Her lover, Cephalus, runs towards her in despair as he realizes what has befallen his beloved. On the left side of the composition, we see Aurora and Titone riding on a magnificent chariot drawn by four majestic horses. Interestingly enough, it is believed that Aurora played a role in Procris' demise due to her jealousy over Cephalus. In the background preceding their cart, Venus (or perhaps Hesperus) gracefully holds a star while flying through the air. This adds an ethereal touch to the overall composition. It is worth noting that these scenes are inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses. Baldassarre Peruzzi's skillful brushwork brings forth both beauty and tragedy in this fresco fragment. The delicate details and vibrant colors capture our imagination as we delve into this mythological narrative within Villa Farnesina's Sala delle Prospettive.
