Double canoe off Moalu, Feejee Islands, Septr 26th 1849 [Fiji], 1849 (pen, ink)

7295606 Double canoe off Moalu, Feejee Islands, Septr 26th 1849 [Fiji], 1849 (pen, ink) by Fanshawe, Admiral Sir Edward Gennys (1814-1906); 15.7x25.8 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Admiral Sir Edward Gennys Fanshawe
Mounted in album with PAI4605-PAI4632, PAI4634-PAI4670.; No.27. Technique includes scraped highlights. No. 27 in Fanshawe's Pacific album, 1849-1852. Captioned by the artist on the album page below the image, as title. This drawing is reproduced in Fanshawe's biography (1904), f. p. 236. It records his approach to the Fijis in the Daphne, running before a light wind with her studding sails rigged, and a double-hulled war canoe crossing her stern. His daughter's related linking passage (p. 236), presumably repeating what he noted or told her, records the incident: Some of the Fijian war canoes were very fine; one which met the Daphne outside the islands actually sailed round her, though the ship was at the time under full sail, with studding sails set. This was a large double canoe, with a high platform built across, connecting the two boats. Later, on Rewa, Fanshawe saw a fine specimen of a double canoe. It was nearly a hundred feet long, and its depth of hold five feet six inches (p. 240). He did nine drawings of Fiji and Fijians, including two studies of local weapons, PAI4631-PAI4639.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This pen and ink print by Admiral Sir Edward Gennys Fanshawe transports us back to the stunning Feejee Islands in 1849. The intricate details of the double canoe off Moalu on September 26th, with its two hulls connected by a high platform, are beautifully captured in this artwork. Fanshawe's skillful technique, including scraped highlights, brings to life the moment when his ship, the 'Daphne', encountered this impressive Fijian war canoe during their approach to the islands. As described by Fanshawe's daughter in his biography, the war canoes of Fiji were truly remarkable vessels that could sail swiftly even around a fully rigged ship like the 'Daphne'. The artist's keen eye for detail is evident in every stroke of this drawing, from the sails billowing in the wind to the intricate design of the double canoe itself. This piece is not just a work of art but also a historical record of Fanshawe's encounters with Fijian culture during his time in the Pacific. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back in time to witness firsthand the beauty and craftsmanship of these traditional Fijian canoes. It serves as a reminder of our rich maritime history and cultural connections that span across oceans and centuries.
