EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning Marquetry table on a carved and gilded lime wood base, dating back to 1689. Created by the Flemish School in the 17th century, this masterpiece stands at an impressive height of 83.5 cm and is currently housed in the prestigious Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The intricate craftsmanship of this table is truly remarkable. Michiel Verbiest and Pieter de Loose collaborated to create the tabletop, with De Loose likely responsible for the marquetry or engraving work. The top features exquisite coats of arms belonging to Simon de Neuf and Jacoba van Eversdijck, who were wedded in Antwerp during 1686. Every detail on this piece tells a story - from the delicately carved fruit, flowers, foliage, lions, rams, garlands to even incorporating mother of pearl and copper elements. Its baroque style exudes opulence and elegance that was characteristic of Dutch Golden Age furniture. This Marquetry table not only serves as a decorative item but also symbolizes celebration and union through its wedding-themed motifs. It represents the rich cultural heritage of Belgium's Antwerp region within Flanders during the seventeenth century. With its ornate design inspired by botany and natural history intertwined with scientific precision, this Marquetry table exemplifies both artistry and functionality. It remains an enduring testament to the mastery achieved by Flemish artisans during this period.
