EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Four-in-Hand (colour litho)" by James Pollard takes us back to the early twentieth century in England. The image, a colour lithograph, is an illustration for Hillaire Belloc's book "The Highway and its Vehicles" published in 1926. The scene depicts a picturesque road surrounded by lush greenery and rolling hills. A four-horse carriage, known as a four-in-hand, gracefully glides along the path with elegance and precision. The vibrant colours of the lithograph bring life to this moment frozen in time. Transportation was essential during this era, and the image beautifully captures one of the means of travel available at that time. The carriage symbolizes luxury and sophistication, reflecting the lifestyle of those who could afford such elegant modes of transportation. As we gaze upon this artwork from Bridgeman Images' private collection, we are transported into a different world - one where journeys were taken on winding lanes instead of highways crowded with cars. It reminds us to appreciate not only how far we have come but also the beauty found in simpler times. This stunning illustration serves as a reminder that art has the power to transport us through time and evoke emotions within us. It allows us to reflect on our past while appreciating our present-day advancements in technology and transportation.
