The 28th were part of the Anglo-Indian Suakin Field Force which operated from Suakin on the Red Sea as a diversion to the main (ultimately unsuccessful) attempt to relieve Major General Gordon, besieged in Khartoum by the Mahdi and his Sudanese army, by means of an advance up the Nile Valley.
