Enjoying the Country - A Glimpse into 19th Century Leisure

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This coloured engraving, titled "Enjoying the Country" offers a delightful window into the leisurely pursuits of a bygone era. Created by an anonymous English School artist in the 19th century, this print captures a moment of respite and tranquility amidst nature's embrace. The scene unfolds near an old mill, where a family finds solace from their bustling city lives. Papa and Mamma are seen reclining on a checkered blanket, basking in the warm sunlight as they take in the picturesque countryside. Little Katie and Lucy frolic nearby, their laughter echoing through the air as they chase butterflies with sheer joy. The attention to detail is remarkable; every blade of grass seems to sway gently in harmony with nature's rhythm. The engraver skillfully brings life to each character - Phil gazes curiously at his surroundings while Mary leans against her father's shoulder, contentment etched upon her face. As we gaze upon this enchanting artwork, we are transported back in time – reminded of simpler days when families sought solace and rejuvenation within nature's embrace. This illustration was originally featured in "The Favourite Picture Book" published by Grant and Griffith around 1860. Preserved within private collections for generations, this exquisite print now invites us to immerse ourselves in its historical charm once more. It serves as both a testament to our shared history and an invitation to find
