Do You Know: Where the name "John Bull" comes from? (colour litho)

8668148 Do You Know: Where the name "John Bull" comes from? (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Where the name "John Bull" comes from? It is generally accepted that a work written by a Scottish physician, John Arbuthnot (1667-1735), was responsible for the name "John Bull". Arbuthnot wrote of political affairs in Europe, and the fanciful character he drew showed John as a plain-dealing honest fellow, courageous and rather hot-tempered; a somewhat difficult person to deal with, especially under coercion, but when treated kindly one that could be easily persuaded. There was a John Bull in real life who lived in the 16th century, and he was regarded as the composer of "God Save the King" - the melody is supposed to have been found amongst his papers after decease.
