8668733 Sea Adventure: The last fight of the "Revenge" (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: The last fight of the "Revenge." When Lord Thomas Howard's squadron of seven ships was surprised at the Azores in 1591 by a Spanish fleet of fifty-three, his second-in-command, Sir Richard Grenville, in the Revenge, stayed to embark the sick who had been landed. He also hoped to out-manoeuvre the enemy; unable to do this he fought the whole Spanish fleet single-handed. Although the Revenge, reduced to a wreck, was finally compelled to surrender after sixteen hours fighting, with the gallant Sir Richard mortally wounded and at last forced below, she enabled the rest to escape.
