EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the intricate carving of Thuner, the god of thunder, created by John Michael Rysbrack in the early 18th century. This sculpture was part of a series of seven Saxon gods commissioned for Lord Cobham's garden at Stowe, where they were strategically placed around the Temple of Liberty to convey a powerful political message. Made from Portland stone, Thuner stands as a symbol of strength and power, embodying the forces of nature that were revered by ancient civilizations. His presence alongside other deities like Sunna adds depth to the religious undertones present in Rysbrack's work. The detailed bas-reliefs and wooden carvings on Thuner's figure showcase Rysbrack's exceptional skill as a sculptor, capturing every nuance and expression with precision. The statue exudes an aura of authority and majesty, making it a focal point within any space it occupies. Formerly located at Stowe in Buckinghamshire, this piece now resides in history as a testament to both artistic mastery and political symbolism. As you gaze upon this image, let yourself be transported back in time to an era where gods walked among mortals and legends were carved into stone for all to behold.
