The Introduction of the Pigtail (litho)

8661042 The Introduction of the Pigtail (litho) by Wright, Henry Charles Seppings (1850-1937); Private Collection; (add.info.: The Introduction of the Pigtail. The first thing the Manchus did was to make the "pigtail" style of coiffure obligatory throughout the empire. In the north there were already a certain number of Chinese who, mostly from fear, had shaved their heads as a token of submission to the new ruler; but in the south resistance to the order was obstinate and prolonged, and was only swept away gradually. Upon the abdication of the Manchus in 1912 the wearing of the pigtail was generally discontinued. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson, c.1920). EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph, titled "The Introduction of the Pigtail," depicts a significant moment in Chinese history during the reign of the Manchus. The image showcases the enforcement of the pigtail hairstyle as a symbol of submission to the new rulers throughout the empire. In the north, some Chinese had already shaved their heads out of fear, but resistance in the south was fierce and prolonged. The artist, Henry Charles Seppings Wright, skillfully captures the tension and apprehension on the faces of those depicted in this scene. The historical significance of this event is evident in every detail portrayed in this lithograph. As we gaze upon this artwork, we are transported back to a time when cultural identity and tradition clashed with political power. The legacy of this period endured until 1912 when abdication led to an end to mandatory pigtail wearing. Through digital enhancement for reproduction purposes, Bridgeman Images has preserved this piece for future generations to appreciate and reflect upon. This print serves as a reminder of how history shapes our present reality and urges us to learn from past struggles for freedom and self-expression.
