After the death of Aristides, and the ostracism of Themistocles in BC 470, Cimon, the son of Miltiades, was the greatest and richest man in Athens. He used his wealth for the adornment of Athens and for the pleasure of his fellow citizens. The picture shows him seated at his table, which was free to all Athenians, in the company of such men as Aeschylus, and the painter Polygnotus, who is discussing a picture with him.
