828880 Study of a boy playing a flute, c.1900 (sepia photo) by Gloeden, Wilhelm von (1856-1931); Private Collection; (add.info.: Named " the most important gay visual artist of the pre-World War I era" according to Thomas Waugh, Baron Wilhelm von Gloeden (1856 - 1931) was a German photographer who worked mainly in Italy. He is mostly known for his pastoral nude studies of Sicilian boys, which usually featured props such as wreaths or amphoras suggesting a setting in the Greece or Italy of antiquity. From a modern standpoint, his work is commendable due to his controlled use of lighting as well as the often elegant poses of his models. Innovative use of photographic filters and special body makeup (a mixture of milk, olive oil, and glycerin) to disguise skin blemishes contribute to the artistic perfection of his works.); Prismatic Pictures; German, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This sepia print titled "Study of a boy playing a flute, c. 1900" by Wilhelm von Gloeden transports us to a world of timeless beauty and artistic perfection. The image showcases the talent and skill of this renowned German photographer who found his inspiration in Italy. Gloeden's work is celebrated for its neoclassical aesthetic, often featuring pastoral nude studies of Sicilian boys against backdrops that evoke ancient Greece or Italy. In this particular piece, we witness a young boy immersed in the enchanting melody produced by his woodwind instrument. The composition is meticulously crafted, with controlled lighting accentuating the elegant pose struck by the model. Gloeden's innovative use of photographic filters and special body makeup further enhances the flawless appearance of his subjects. While Gloeden's works have been described as homoerotic due to their exploration of male nudity, it is important to appreciate them within their historical context. His photographs offer an intimate glimpse into youth and innocence rather than being solely focused on sexuality. This photograph captures not only the musicality but also the vulnerability and purity inherent in childhood. It serves as a testament to Gloeden's ability to create art that transcends time, inviting viewers into a world where classical beauty meets contemporary sensibilities.
