Atauhuallpa was the son of the ruler Huaina Ccapac. His brother Huascar succeeded Huaina Ccapac in 1527, as Atauhuallpa was considered illegitimate by Peruvian law. He obtained, however, the kingdom of Quito. A civil war broke out between the two brothers, in which Huascar was defeated and thrown into prison.
