Do You Know: Where did the kiss originate? (colour litho)
8668111 Do You Know: Where did the kiss originate? (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Where did the kiss originate? The kiss as a symbol of love might almost be described as modern. The kiss of affection can be traced back to ancient Greece, that of respect to West Asia, and references to it are made in the Bible; the ceremonial salutation developed in Persia. The practice of "kissing the Book" after taking oath in a court of law springs from Greco-Roman customs of kissing the feet of temple statues. Undoubtedly the kiss originated by accident, perhaps in a similar way to an animal nuzzling her cubs, and as some satisfaction was derived, it persisted.
