Incense Burner and Stand for an Altar Cross, 1150-1175 (bronze: cast, gilded, engraved
491121 Incense Burner and Stand for an Altar Cross, 1150-1175 (bronze: cast, gilded, engraved, and chased) by Romanesque, (12th century); h:18.10 w:12.70 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: Supported by dragon-shaped feet on its corners, this unusual object is fashioned like a small, centralized church with gabled roofs, a lantern crowned by a turret, and four semi-circular apses. Traces of soot on the interior walls of a nearly identical object in the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin indicate that these objects once served as incense burners. The objects design with an open turret in the center of the roof further suggests that they may have doubled as stands for altar crosses. The fact that both objects formerly belonged to the Bouvier Collection in Amiens may be taken as an indication that they were made as a pair in the same 12th-century workshop.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite piece of Romanesque art, the "Incense Burner and Stand for an Altar Cross" dating back to 1150-1175. Crafted from cast bronze and adorned with gilding, engravings, and intricate chasing, this small object is reminiscent of a centralized church with its gabled roofs, semi-circular apses, and a lantern crowned by a turret. What sets this incense burner apart is its dragon-shaped feet on each corner, adding a touch of mythical charm. Traces of soot found on the interior walls suggest that it was once used as an incense burner in religious ceremonies. Additionally, the design featuring an open turret at the center roof hints at its potential dual purpose as a stand for altar crosses. Interestingly enough, another nearly identical object housed in Berlin's Kunstgewerbemuseum also shows signs of being used as an incense burner. The fact that both objects were part of the Bouvier Collection in Amiens suggests they were created as a pair within the same workshop during the 12th century. This remarkable artifact now resides in Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA after being acquired through funds provided by J. H. Wade. Its timeless beauty continues to captivate viewers today and serves as a testament to the skillful craftsmanship and artistic vision prevalent during the Romanesque period.
