EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite diptych sundial, crafted from ivory and dating back to the mid-17th century, is a true marvel of both artistry and functionality. The delicate carvings on its surface hint at the skilled hands of Nicolaus Miller (?), who may have been the mastermind behind this intricate piece. As you open the cover of this sundial set for latitude 49 degrees, you are transported back in time to an era where navigation relied heavily on tools like these. The precision with which it measures time and direction is a testament to the scientific knowledge and craftsmanship of the period. The warm glow of sunlight filtering through as you gaze upon this sundial evokes a sense of wonder and admiration for ancient technologies. Its dual purpose as both a practical tool for sailors and a work of art showcases the ingenuity and creativity that characterized the Renaissance era. Whether used by seasoned navigators or admired by art enthusiasts, this diptych sundial stands as a symbol of human innovation and curiosity about our place in the universe. It serves as a reminder that even in simpler times, people sought ways to understand and harness the power of nature for their benefit.
