EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of aristocratic life in the 19th century. The subjects of the photograph are Blandine, Cosima, and Daniel, the children of Marie d'Agoult and renowned composer Franz Liszt. Painted by Amelie de Lacepede in a delicate pastel on paper technique, this portrait showcases the beauty and innocence of these young individuals. Marie d'Agoult, also known as Countess d'Agoult, was not only an aristocrat but also a mistress to Franz Liszt from 1834 to 1844. Her children with Liszt - Blandine (born in 1835), Cosima (born in 1837), and Daniel (born in 1839) - were captured here at a tender age. The photograph provides us with a glimpse into their privileged upbringing within high society. It is fascinating to note that Cosima would go on to marry conductor Hans von Bulow before becoming Richard Wagner's wife later on. She even became director of the Bayreuth Festivals from 1883 to 1908. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, we can appreciate both its historical significance and artistic merit. The image carries an air of elegance while offering insight into the lives led by those born into privilege during this era.
