This grisaille or pen-painting depicts the last battle of the First Anglo-Dutch War, 1652-1654, and is based on eyewitness sketches by the artist, who was present and has interpreted it as a success for the Dutch. It was more widely regarded as a Dutch defeat, since they lost 15 ships. More disastrously, they also lost their leader, Lieutenant-Admiral Maerten Tromp, who was killed at the beginning of the engagement, producing confusion in the Dutch fleet. As a result the English were able to impose fairly harsh terms on the Dutch at the ensuing peace conference.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning grisaille painting by Willem van de Velde, the Elder, captures the dramatic Battle of Scheveningen on 10 August 1653 during the First Anglo-Dutch War. The artist's meticulous attention to detail and use of monochromatic tones bring this historical naval battle to life, showcasing the chaos and intensity of warfare at sea.
Based on eyewitness sketches by van de Velde himself, this artwork depicts a pivotal moment in Dutch history where Lieutenant-Admiral Maerten Tromp lost his life at the beginning of the engagement. Despite van de Velde interpreting it as a success for the Dutch, history remembers it as a defeat due to their loss of ships and leader.
The smoke-filled sky and turbulent waters convey the sense of urgency and danger faced by sailors during this fierce confrontation. The sheer size of the panel (114.3x156.2 cm) allows viewers to immerse themselves in every intricate detail, from billowing sails to crashing waves.
As one gazes upon this masterpiece housed in London's National Maritime Museum, they can't help but feel transported back in time to witness firsthand the bravery and sacrifice displayed by those who fought valiantly on both sides. This painting serves as a powerful reminder of our shared maritime heritage and the enduring legacy of those who sailed into battle centuries ago.
