EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Stanley, a renowned journalist and adventurer, in 1880. Painted by Dorothy Tennant, later known as Dorothy Stanley after marrying Henry Morton Stanley, this oil on canvas artwork measures 41.9x31.7 cm and is held in a private collection. Henry Morton Stanley gained fame for his famous encounter with Dr. David Livingstone when he uttered the iconic phrase "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" upon finding the lost Scottish missionary by Lake Tanganyika. A journalist turned adventurer, Stanley documented his epic journey in a book that propelled him into Victorian hero status. However, his reputation took a hit when his next expedition to trace the Congo River resulted in the loss of over 200 men and lasted nearly three years. Despite this setback, this portrait painted by Tennant ten years before their marriage showcases an enigmatic profile of Henry Morton Stanley. The image portrays both strength and vulnerability as it captures the head and shoulders of this notable writer against a timeless backdrop. With its rich colors and intricate brushstrokes, it immortalizes not only Henry Morton Stanley but also Dorothy Tennant's talent as an artist. Displayed at eThe Ms Gallery in London and now available through Fine Art Finder from Bridgeman Images, this photograph offers viewers a glimpse into history while celebrating two remarkable individuals - one male journalist-turned-adventurer and one female writer who captured his essence on canvas.
