EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing traditional Japanese woodblock print by the renowned artist Utagawa Toyokuni. Known for his mastery of ukiyo-e, Toyokuni I's exceptional talent is evident in this thought-provoking artwork. The image portrays two pearl divers, known as Ama divers, immersed in their daily routine. One diver stands confidently on a rock, gracefully wringing out her clothes while gripping a knife between her teeth. Her determination and skill are palpable as she navigates the depths of the sea. Beside her, another diver holds a sizable oyster shell with anticipation, ready to unveil its hidden treasure. The scene unfolds against the backdrop of an imposing rock formation adorned with wet hair clinging to their bodies—a testament to their arduous work underwater. Above them, a flock of starlings swirls around in harmonious chaos, adding an ethereal touch to the composition. On the distant horizon, sails from Junks can be glimpsed—symbolizing both connection and isolation within this vast oceanic realm. This exquisite woodblock print is not only visually stunning but also offers insight into the lives and resilience of these remarkable women. As part of Bernard Allum's personal collection, this extraordinary piece captures both beauty and intrigue—an homage to Toyokuni I's artistic brilliance that continues to captivate viewers today.
