EDITORS COMMENTS
This watercolor painting by Dorling Kindersley takes us on a journey through time, showcasing the evolution of our planet's continents over millions of years. The illustration features three globes, each representing a different era: 200 million years ago, 50 million years ago, and present day. The first globe transports us back to a prehistoric era when Earth looked vastly different than it does today. Continents were connected in supercontinents like Pangaea, surrounded by vast oceans that covered much of the planet's surface. This depiction reminds us of the dynamic nature of our world and how it has changed dramatically over time. Moving forward 50 million years brings us to an intermediate stage where continents have started to shift and separate. Plate tectonics are at work as landmasses begin their slow dance across the globe. We can observe familiar shapes taking form but with distinct differences from what we know today. Finally, we arrive at present day on the third globe. The continents have assumed their current positions, forming recognizable shapes that define our modern geography. This snapshot serves as a reminder that even though our world may seem static now, it is constantly evolving beneath its surface. Dorling Kindersley's skillful use of watercolors brings this educational piece to life against a clean white background. Without any human presence or distractions, viewers can focus solely on appreciating the beauty and complexity of Earth's development throughout history captured within these three objects suspended in space.
