Stepping into this scene is like stepping into the pages of Charles Dickens's iconic novel, Oliver Twist. Known as a notorious center for fences or receivers of stolen property, Field Lane was teeming with intrigue and crime. The engraving captures the essence of this Dickensian connection perfectly. The shop signs tell their own story: "Scrooge Broker" hints at the miserly character from A Christmas Carol, while "Fagan" looms over a shop selling handkerchiefs - reminiscent of the infamous Fagin who trained young pickpockets.
