Ann Old Coleman (Mrs. Robert Coleman), c. 1820 - A Glimpse into the Elegance of 19th Century America

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This portrait, created by Jacob Eichholtz in the early 19th century, transports us back to a time of grace and refinement. Ann Old Coleman, known as Mrs. Robert Coleman, is beautifully captured in this oil painting on canvas transferred to wood. Dressed in a stunning country-style dress adorned with delicate frills and ruffles, Mrs. Coleman exudes an air of sophistication and poise. Her bonnet sits gracefully atop her head, complementing her elegant headdress made of lace. Eichholtz's attention to detail is evident in every brushstroke; from the intricate lacework on Mrs. Coleman's cap to the subtle play of colors that bring life to her portrait. As we gaze upon this artwork housed at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D. C. , we are transported back two centuries ago when women like Mrs. Coleman were admired for their beauty and refined manners. This portrait serves as a testament not only to Jacob Eichholtz's skill as an artist but also as a window into the lives and fashions of American women during this era.
