The Arrival of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales at Alexandria, Egypt, 1862. Creator: Smyth

The Arrival of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales at Alexandria, Egypt, 1862. The future King Edward VII goes to Africa. Engraving of a drawing sent by M. Conseil. The Prince arrived at Alexandria on the 1st April. The arrangements for his reception underwent considerable modification, and, among other things, the intention of receiving him with a sort of feu de joie from the batteries of the harbour was abandoned. The matter was compromised by the Prince landing under the ordinary salute of twenty-one guns, which the Viceroy insisted could not be dispensed with, since its omission would have been liable to be misconstrued by the people of the country. His Royal Highness landed at the railway terminus, and at once went on to Cairo, where the Viceroy awaited his arrival and received him with every possible attention'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled "The Arrival of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales at Alexandria, Egypt, 1862," is a testament to a significant moment in history. The future King Edward VII of Great Britain and Ireland, then known as Prince Albert Edward, embarked on a royal visit to Africa, making his way to Egypt via the Mediterranean Sea. The Prince arrived at Alexandria on April 1, 1862, and the reception was met with great anticipation. The original plans for a grand welcoming ceremony with a 'feu de joie' from the harbor batteries were altered due to concerns over potential misinterpretation by the local population. Instead, the Prince received the standard twenty-one gun salute as he disembarked at the railway terminus. The Viceroy of Egypt, Sir Evelyn Baring, eagerly awaited his arrival and extended a warm welcome. The Prince's voyage to Alexandria was made aboard a paddle steamer, as evidenced by the steam funnels in the background. The image also depicts smaller rowboats and sailboats in the harbor, adding to the bustling scene. The crowd on the shore, filled with excitement, is a clear indication of the significance of this royal visit. This engraving, created by Smyth from a drawing sent by M. Conseil, was first published in the Illustrated London News in 1862. It offers a glimpse into the grandeur and pageantry of a royal visit during the 19th century, a time when European powers were expanding their influence in Africa and the Mediterranean.
