The Battle on the Volturno - the final repulse of the Neapolitans... 1860. Creator: Unknown

The Battle on the Volturno - the final repulse of the Neapolitans - from a sketch by our special artist, Frank Vizetelly, 1860. The Royalists were steadily advancing on all sides, and matters were beginning to look black, indeed, for the national cause, when Garibaldi, seeing how critical was the state of affairs, galloped to the head of three or four hundred of his men, and, shouting "Corragio Avanti!" dashed right into the enemy's ranks, and, being followed by his soldiers, the Royalists were driven back at the bayonet's point to the gates of Capua. This brilliant incident, which occurred at the foot of Monte St. Angelo, decided the fortunes of the day". From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Battle on the Volturno: The Final Repulse of the Neapolitans," an enigmatic and evocative image from the 19th century, captures the dramatic moment of the turning point in the Battle of the Volturno during the Expedition of the Thousand led by Giuseppe Garibaldi in 1860. The scene unfolds at the foot of Monte St. Angelo in Capua, Caserta, Campania, Italy. The Royalist forces, represented by the dark masses in the background, are steadily advancing on all sides, and the National cause appears to be on the brink of defeat. Amidst the chaos, Garibaldi, the charismatic leader, rallies his troops with the battle cry "Coraggio Avanti!" and charges into the enemy ranks. The courage and determination of Garibaldi and his men, depicted in the foreground, result in the repulse of the Royalists, driving them back to the gates of Capua. The image, created from a sketch by Frank Vizetelly for the Illustrated London News, is a testament to the bravery and tenacity of the Garibaldians. The engraving showcases the raw power of the armaments, with cannons and bayonets at the ready, and the stark contrast between the living and the dead on the battlefield. The horses and their riders, both friend and foe, add to the sense of urgency and the dramatic clash of forces. The banner of the National cause flutters in the wind, symbolizing hope amidst the chaos of war. This powerful image, a snapshot of history, brings to life the pivotal moment in the Italian Unification and the legacy of Giuseppe Garibaldi, a man whose courage and determination changed the course of history.
