EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from 1876, we find the enigmatic figure of the Begum of Bhopal, a Muslim ruler of Bhopal State in central India, seated next to Maharajah Mohender Singh of Puttiala. The image, an engraving from a photograph by Shepherd and Bourne, was first published in the esteemed "Illustrated London News." The Begum of Bhopal hails from a Mohammedan dynasty of Afghan descent, a lineage that has seen several widows ascend to the throne. The population under her rule, numbering over half a million, is predominantly Hindu. Despite being a Muslim ruler, the Begum's authority is recognized by the British, who have established a protectorate over her province. Maharajah Mohender Singh, a Sikh chieftain, is the ruler of Puttiala, a province located in the Sirhind region, south of the river Sutlej, and over a thousand miles from Calcutta. He is seen here wearing an impressive jeweled head-dress, a symbol of his status and wealth. The Maharajah of Puttiala is renowned for his courtesies, liberality, and his amicable disposition towards the English in India. This photograph, taken during a time when India was under British colonial rule, offers a glimpse into the complex web of relationships that existed between the various princely states and the British Raj. The image, though devoid of a known creator, is a testament to the rich cultural and historical tapestry of India during the late 19th century. It invites us to explore the lives of these powerful figures, their traditions, and the intricate political landscape of the time.
