EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the powerful presence of Bishop Fisher, a prominent figure in English Catholic history. Painted by the renowned artist Hans Holbein the Younger, this portrait captures the essence of Saint John Fisher, an influential bishop, cardinal, and martyr. During a tumultuous period in England's history, Fisher courageously protested against King Henry VIII's controversial decision to divorce Catherine of Aragon. As a result of his unwavering loyalty to his faith and refusal to accept Henry as head of the church, Fisher was imprisoned in the Tower of London. Tragically accused of treason for his religious beliefs, Fisher met his untimely end on June 25th when he was beheaded. However, even after his death, Fisher's legacy endured as he was canonized in 1935. The drawing by Holbein that inspired this print is part of the collection belonging to King at Windsor Castle. It beautifully portrays Bishop Fisher's resolute expression and dignified demeanor. This historical portrait not only serves as a visual representation but also pays homage to an individual who stood up for what he believed in despite facing immense adversity. Through this image captured by Charles Robert Leslie Fletcher from "Historical Portraits" we are reminded of Bishop Fisher's unwavering commitment to his faith during one of England's most transformative periods - The Reformation.
