Cardinal Wiseman, Preaching, 1850. Creator: Unknown

Cardinal Wiseman, Preaching, 1850. The ceremonial prescribed by the Roman Catholic Church for the induction of an Archbishop to his see was performed at the church of St. George's, Southwark [in London]...The customary form of prayer having been read, the mitre, which had been exchanged for a scarlet cap a short time before, was formally placed upon the head of the new Archbishop, whilst the crosier, emblematic of his authority, was also placed in his hand...The solemnities of high mass were then proceeded with; after which the Bull was publicly read, in virtue of which Cardinal Wiseman assumes the Archiepiscopal jurisdiction of Westminster'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, titled 'Cardinal Wiseman, Preaching,' dates back to the 19th century and depicts the renowned Cardinal Nicholas Patrick Stephen Wiseman during his induction as the Archbishop of Westminster in London. The ceremony took place at the historic St. George's Church, where the traditional Roman Catholic rites were performed. In the image, Cardinal Wiseman is shown wearing the ceremonial attire of a bishop, including a mitre on his head and a pastoral staff in his hand. The bishop's crook, symbolizing his spiritual authority, is also visible. The solemnities of a high mass followed the placement of the mitre and crozier, and the Bull, which officially granted Wiseman jurisdiction over the Archdiocese of Westminster, was publicly read. The photograph is an engraving from the Illustrated London News, published in 1850. It captures a significant moment in the life of this influential Catholic leader, who was known for his dedication to the faith and his role in the religious and political landscape of Victorian Britain. The image offers a glimpse into the rich history of Catholicism in the United Kingdom and the grandeur of the ceremonial attire and rituals associated with the ordination of a bishop.
