Cocoa in full bearing, Trinidad and Tobago, c1914. Creator: Unknown

Cocoa in full bearing, Trinidad and Tobago, c1914. Indo-Trinidadian man and small boy, the man has a machete for cutting down the cocoa pods. Between 1845 and 1917, during the British colonial period, poor Indians arrived in Trinidad and were given jobs either as indentured labourers, workers or educated servicemen. Known as Indo-Trinidadians and Tobagonians or Indian Trinidadians, they became nationals of Trinidad and Tobago. Cacao, or cocoa, has contributed to the socio-economic development of Trinidad and Tobago for over 200 years, ever since the Spanish first planted the Criollo variety in 1525. [Muir, Marshall & Co]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the vibrant cocoa industry in full swing in Trinidad and Tobago around 1914. An unknown photographer skillfully captured an Indo-Trinidadian man and a small boy amidst the lush cocoa plantation. The man, equipped with a machete, stands tall as he prepares to cut down the ripe cocoa pods. The image holds historical significance as it sheds light on the arrival of poor Indians who became indentured laborers or workers during the British colonial period between 1845 and 1917. These individuals, known as Indo-Trinidadians and Tobagonians or Indian Trinidadians, eventually became nationals of Trinidad and Tobago. Cocoa has played a vital role in shaping the socio-economic development of this Caribbean nation for over two centuries since its introduction by Spanish settlers in 1525. This photograph serves as a testament to that enduring legacy. The hand-colored print showcases not only the beauty of nature but also highlights important aspects such as agriculture, harvest, poverty, and colonialism. It offers viewers a glimpse into life on a cocoa plantation during this era. Preserved by Heritage Images, this remarkable piece provides us with valuable insights into both local history and global trade dynamics surrounding one of our favorite indulgences - chocolate.
