Colossal statue of Lord Collingwood, at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 1845. Creator: Unknown
Colossal statue of Lord Collingwood, at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 1845. Sculpture of British naval commander Cuthbert Collingwood. This magnificent statue of the great Collingwood, the bosom friend of Nelson, has recently been completed by Mr. Lough, and is a fine specimen of the genius of that distinguished sculptor. The material is stone: height, 23 feet. It has been placed on a pedestal about 50 feet high, on a plot of ground belonging to the Duke of Northumberland, at Tynemouth, close to the place of Lord Collingwoods birth; and it is seen well from the sea....apart from his brilliant naval services, it would be difficult to point out many names on the scroll of British fame of such untarnished reputation...In command, he was firm, but mild - most considerate to the comfort and health of his men, averse to flogging, and all violent and brutal exercises of authority.... From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the colossal statue of Lord Collingwood, a renowned British naval commander, in all its grandeur. Created by an unknown artist in 1845, this sculpture stands as a magnificent tribute to the esteemed Collingwood and his close friendship with Admiral Nelson. Crafted from stone and towering at an impressive height of 23 feet, it is a testament to the exceptional talent of Mr. Lough, the distinguished sculptor responsible for its completion. Situated on a lofty pedestal approximately 50 feet high within Tynemouth, near Lord Collingwood's birthplace and owned by the Duke of Northumberland, this awe-inspiring artwork commands attention even from afar. Its strategic placement allows it to be admired not only by land but also by those sailing across the sea. Beyond his remarkable naval achievements, Lord Collingwood's reputation remains untarnished among Britain's most illustrious figures. Known for his unwavering command style that balanced firmness with kindness and consideration towards his men's well-being and health, he vehemently opposed harsh disciplinary measures such as flogging or any form of brutal authority. Captured in this vintage photograph from "Illustrated London News" published in 1845 (not associated with any commercial use), we are reminded of Lord Collingwood's enduring legacy as one of Britain's greatest heroes.
