The Covenanters, 1926. Artist: William Harris Weatherhead

The Covenanters, 1926. The Covenanters formed an important movement in the religion and politics of Scotland in the 17th century. In religion the movement is most associated with the promotion and development of Presbyterianism as a form of church government favoured by the people, as opposed to Episcopacy, favoured by the crown. In politics the movement saw important developments in the character and operation of the Scottish Parliament, which began a steady shift away from its medieval origins. The movement as a whole was essentially conservative in tone, but it began a revolution that engulfed Scotland, England and Ireland, the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. From An Outline of Christianity, The Story of Our Civilisation, volume 3: The Rise of the Modern Church, edited by RG Parsons and AS Peake, published by the Waverley Book Club (London, 1926)

The Covenanters, 1926

EDITORS COMMENTS
by William Harris Weatherhead captures the essence of a significant movement in Scottish history. The print depicts a scene from the 17th century when the Covenanters played a crucial role in shaping both religion and politics in Scotland. The Covenanters were known for their unwavering commitment to Presbyterianism, advocating for it as the preferred form of church government over Episcopacy, which was favored by the crown. In this artwork, we see a family gathered around a table, engaged in prayer. The mother sits with her children while dressed in traditional attire that reflects the era's conservative tone. The artist skillfully uses color to evoke emotions and convey historical authenticity. The Covenanters' influence extended beyond religious matters; they also brought about significant changes to Scottish Parliament's structure and operation. Their movement marked a turning point away from medieval origins towards modern governance. William Harris Weatherhead's painting serves as an important reminder of this transformative period in Scottish history. It is part of "An Outline of Christianity" published by RG Parsons and AS Peake, which explores the rise of modern church practices within our civilization. This print not only showcases Weatherhead's artistic talent but also highlights the enduring legacy left behind by those who fought for their beliefs during turbulent times.
