Edinburgh: the Castle, from the Greyfriars Cemetery, 1864. Creator: Unknown

Edinburgh: the Castle, from the Greyfriars Cemetery, 1864. The first object which every one visits in the Old Town is the renowned Castle of Edinburgh. Its origin is lost in the mists of antiquity, but the situation is so commanding that it has doubtless been occupied ever since primitive man became civilised into the arts of offence and defence...The ascent is by a road...The principal objects shown to visitors are the regalia and the Mons Meg - the latter a large cannon, which burst, in 1682'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the iconic Edinburgh Castle from the Greyfriars' Cemetery in 1864. The castle, shrouded in history and mystery, stands proudly atop Castle Hill, overlooking the city below. Its origins date back to ancient times, serving as a symbol of power and strength throughout the centuries. The image showcases not only the impressive fortress itself but also the surrounding burial grounds of Greyfriars Kirkyard. The juxtaposition of life and death is palpable in this scene, with gravestones standing as silent witnesses to the passage of time. Visitors to Edinburgh were drawn to explore the regalia housed within the castle walls, as well as marvel at Mons Meg - a formidable cannon that met its explosive end in 1682. The engraving from "Illustrated London News" provides a glimpse into a bygone era when travel was an adventure and discovery awaited around every corner. As we gaze upon this historic snapshot, we are reminded of the enduring allure of Edinburgh's landmarks and their ability to transport us back in time. The unknown creator has captured not just a moment in history but a sense of wonder that continues to captivate viewers today.
