Scene from the embroidery depicting the Norman Invasion of England in 1066. King William I sits down to a banquet with his nobles and Bishop Odo says grace. On the left men hold chickens on skewers and drink from horns. A servant spills a jug of water". This print captures a momentous scene from history depicted in exquisite detail on the renowned Bayeux Tapestry dating back to the late 11th century. The tapestry portrays an iconic event - the Norman Invasion of England in 1066 - where King William I is seen presiding over a grand feast alongside his noble companions. The atmosphere is alive with merriment as men indulge in sumptuous food and drink while seated around an opulent table adorned with ornate furniture fit for royalty. Bishop Odo stands tall, offering prayers of gratitude before this lavish spread. Intriguingly, on one side of this bustling scene are men holding skewered chickens and drinking horn-shaped vessels filled with their favorite libations. Meanwhile, amidst all this revelry, a clumsy servant accidentally spills water from a jug nearby. This remarkable image offers us not only insight into medieval dining customs but also serves as a testament to John Hampson's book "The English At Table" published by William Collins in London during 1944. As we gaze upon this extraordinary print that seamlessly bridges centuries past with our present day, we cannot help but be captivated by its rich colors and intricate details that bring to life an era long gone yet forever etched within our collective memory.
