EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-coloured woodblock print, titled "Flower Viewing, 1711" is a stunning reproduction of a 17th-century masterpiece by the renowned Japanese artist Hishikawa Moronobu. The original work was created during the Edo period and has been attributed to Moronobu himself. In this exquisite piece of art, we are transported to a serene garden setting during springtime. Cherry blossoms delicately adorn the cherry trees, creating a breathtaking canopy of pink and white petals. A group of people can be seen enjoying hanami (flower viewing), an age-old tradition in Japan where friends and families gather under blooming cherry trees to appreciate their beauty. The scene is filled with vibrant colors as men and women relax on picnic mats, sipping tea from elegant teapots while listening to music played on traditional instruments like the samisen or shamisen. The atmosphere exudes tranquility as nature's splendor merges harmoniously with human leisure. Moronobu's mastery in block printing shines through in every detail - from the intricate patterns on clothing to the meticulous rendering of plants and flowers. This artwork not only captures a specific moment in time but also reflects the cultural significance of flower viewing in Japanese society. Displayed at Art Institute Chicago's Asian Arts gallery, this hand-tinted print serves as a testament to Moronobu's artistic brilliance and offers viewers an opportunity to immerse themselves in Japan's rich heritage art.
