Framlingham Castle, 1845. Creator: Unknown
Framlingham Castle, 1845. Norman castle in Suffolk. This picturesque ruin of a fortress of the Middle Ages, stands on the north side of the town of Framlingham, 18 miles north-east of Ipswich. The outer wall is standing: its form is irregular, approaching to a circle, and it is strengthened at intervals by square towers, 13 in number. The wall is 44 feet high, and 8 feet thick; the towers rise to the height of 58 feet. The principal gateway is on the south side, opposite the town, and is sculptured with the arms of the principal families which have possessed the Castle. There are some remains of the outworks. The area within the Castle walls is above an acre and a quarter; but the demolition of the interior is so complete, that very little idea can be formed of its arrangement. The Castle was defended, except where it was protected by the mere, by a double ditch. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to the year 1845, showcasing Framlingham Castle in all its medieval glory. Standing proudly on the outskirts of Suffolk's picturesque town of Framlingham, this Norman fortress is a true testament to the Middle Ages. The irregular yet enchanting shape of the outer wall draws our attention immediately. Strengthened by thirteen square towers at regular intervals, it stands an impressive 44 feet high and 8 feet thick. The towers themselves reach a towering height of 58 feet. As we explore further, our eyes are drawn to the principal gateway on the south side, adorned with intricate sculptures depicting coats of arms from prominent families who once owned this majestic castle. Although some remnants of outworks remain visible, much of the interior has succumbed to time's relentless passage. Protected by a double ditch and surrounded by lush landscapes typical of rural England, Framlingham Castle offers over an acre and a quarter within its walls for exploration and contemplation.
