EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the esteemed French naturalist, Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte du Buffon, in 1774. The portrait was skillfully created by Jacobus Houbraken, showcasing the count's intellectual prowess and influence on scientific thought during the 18th century. Buffon is renowned for his monumental work, "Histoire Naturelle" a comprehensive 44-volume encyclopedia that challenged prevailing beliefs about Earth's creation. In this groundbreaking publication, he proposed that our planet existed long before the widely accepted date of 4004 BC. This audacious theory laid the foundation for future ideas on evolution. The inscription accompanying the portrait highlights Buffon's numerous accomplishments: overseeing royal botanical gardens and holding memberships in prestigious institutions such as the Acedemie Francaise, Royal Academy of Sciences, Royal Society of London and Edinburgh, Royal Academy of Berlin, and St Petersburg. François Hubert Drouais masterfully captured Buffon's essence through this engraving. It portrays a man deeply dedicated to advancing knowledge in biology and natural history—a true scientist at heart. His contribution to literature and science has left an indelible mark on both France and the world. This image serves as a reminder of Buffon's significant role as a pioneer in scientific exploration—an inspiration for generations to come.
