EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph, titled 'The German Dynasty, c. 1888,' captures a historic moment in the Hohenzollern dynasty of Prussia. Taken by the renowned Photo Studio Reichard & Lindner in Berlin, the image features three generations of German and Prussian emperors: Emperor Frederick III (1831-1888), Emperor Wilhelm II (1859-1941), and Emperor William I (1797-1888). At the time of this photograph, Germany was experiencing the 'Year of the Three Emperors.' In quick succession, three Hohenzollern monarchs ascended the throne: William I in 1888, Frederick III in 1888, and Wilhelm II in 1888. This photograph was likely taken during Frederick III's brief reign, which lasted only a few months before his death from lung cancer. Frederick III is depicted seated in the center, wearing the Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire. To his right is his son, Wilhelm II, who would succeed him. On the left is his grandfather, William I, the founder of the German Empire in 1871. The three emperors are shown in formal attire, exuding an air of regal dignity and unity. This photograph is a testament to the Hohenzollern dynasty's enduring legacy and the historical significance of the German Empire during the late 19th century. It is a rare and valuable document of a pivotal moment in German and European history, captured by the skilled artisans at Photo Studio Reichard & Lindner.
