The Great Clock-Dial of the New Houses of Parliament, illuminated, 1856. Creator: Unknown

The Great Clock-Dial of the New Houses of Parliament, [London], illuminated, 1856. The Great Clock, we understand, is ready for being placed in the tower; the upper portion of which we have engraved from a Sketch taken during the experimental lighting of the Clock dial, which, we should explain, is but a rough model made merely for the purpose of trying the power of illumination; the precise details of the dial are not at present decided...The clock has been manufactured by Mr. Dent, of the Strand; and some idea of its magnitude may be imagined when we state the diameter of the face is about twenty four feet'. During the 19th century the tower was known as St Stephen's Tower. Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell inside the tower. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print depicts the illuminated Great Clock-Dial of the New Houses of Parliament in London, taken in 1856. The clock, which would later become known as Big Ben, was nearing completion, with the upper portion of the dial being the focus of this engraving. It is important to note that this image is a rough model, used solely for testing the illumination capabilities. The clock was manufactured by Edward J. Dent of the Strand, and its size is impressive, with the clock face measuring approximately twenty-four feet in diameter. At the time, the tower was referred to as St. Stephen's Tower, and the intricacies of the dial's final design had not yet been determined. The clock's illumination was achieved through gas lighting, a cutting-edge technology of the 19th century. This photograph is an excerpt from the "Illustrated London News," providing a unique glimpse into the construction process of this iconic political landmark. The clock tower, which stands proudly in the City of Westminster, has since become a major tourist attraction and a symbol of British history and tradition.
