Grouse-shooting - from a drawing by Harrison Weir, 1860. Creator: Unknown

Grouse-shooting - from a drawing by Harrison Weir, 1860. Blood sports. Several bags averaged above 18 brace. That of the Prince Consort and Sir George Grey and suite, in the Moss of Monaltrie, was a truly Royal one, and included 120 brace [ie pairs of birds], beside several hares...Reports from the Cumberland moors are favourable, and one of the members for the county, with six guns to help him, bagged 60 brace near Gilsland before the twelve-o'clock halt was called; while another gentleman, on an adjacent moor, shot 29 brace and two snipes in the same space...The Northumberland moors were generally very bare of grouse, but, as on the Scottish ones, there was a tolerable supply of black game...In Ayrshire we hear of one bag of 41 brace, which is eight brace above its owner's number last year...such is the perfection to which shooting is brought, that last season a noble Lord killed the greater number of his grouse with ball; and of course all rifle volunteers with a certificate are in duty bound to follow his example...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

Grouse-shooting,

EDITORS COMMENTS
a captivating drawing by Harrison Weir, transport us back to the Victorian era of grandeur and aristocratic pastimes. This enchanting image depicts a group of elegantly dressed gentlemen and their loyal dogs, engaged in the traditional sport of grouse shooting against a picturesque backdrop of rolling hills and lush greenery. The year is 1860, and the scene unfolds on the Moss of Monaltrie in Scotland. The success of the hunt is evident in the numerous game bags at their feet, filled with an impressive 120 brace of grouse, a feat worthy of royalty, as evidenced by the presence of Prince Consort and Sir George Grey. The excitement of the hunt extends beyond this esteemed group, with reports of bountiful harvests on the Cumberland moors, where one member bagged an impressive 60 brace and another 29 brace on an adjacent moor. The Northumberland moors, while initially appearing bare, provided a tolerable supply of black game. Ayrshire boasts an even more impressive bag of 41 brace, surpassing its owner's previous year's haul. The art of shooting has reached new heights, with many noble lords, including rifle volunteers, following the lead of their peers and opting for ball ammunition to take down their game. This drawing offers a glimpse into a bygone era, where the pursuit of grouse was a symbol of wealth, status, and the beauty of nature. The tradition and camaraderie of the hunt are immortalized in Harrison Weir's masterful depiction, a testament to the enduring allure of this noble sport.
