Heidelberg Castle and town viewed across the Neckar river, Germany, in 1620
Heidelberg Castle and town viewed across the Neckar river, Germany, in 1620. Heidelberg was the home of Frederick V, Elector Palatine and King of Bohemia (1619-1620) and Elizabeth, daughter of James I of England (James VI of Scotland), from their marriage in 1613 until the defeat of the Protestant Bohemian forces at the Battle of the White Mountain near Prague in 1620. Frederick was offered the crown of Bohemia when the kingdoms Protestant Diet deposed the Catholic King Ferdinand II, the Holy Roman Emperor. Frederick accepted, and was crowned in Prague in November 1619. Unfortunately for Frederick, he did not receive the support he expected from James I and the Protestant League, an alliance of German states, and he was defeated and overthrown at the Battle of White Mountain in 1620. The brevity of his reign earned him the derisive title of the Winter King

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1620, offering a glimpse into the majestic Heidelberg Castle and town in Germany. The image showcases the breathtaking view across the Neckar river, with its serene waters reflecting the beauty of this historical site. Heidelberg was once home to King Frederick V of Bohemia, also known as Frederick the Winter King. This castle served as his residence alongside his wife Elizabeth, daughter of James I of England. Their marriage in 1613 brought together two powerful royal families. However, their reign was short-lived and marked by turmoil. When offered the crown of Bohemia after Protestant forces deposed Catholic King Ferdinand II, Frederick accepted without receiving expected support from James I and other German states. Ultimately, he faced defeat at the Battle of White Mountain near Prague in 1620. The significance of this photo lies not only in its stunning depiction but also in capturing a pivotal moment during Europe's Thirty Years' War. It serves as a reminder that even great castles can fall under challenging circumstances. As we admire this monochrome masterpiece created by an unknown artist, we are transported back to an era where power struggles shaped nations and individuals alike. The Heidelberg Castle stands tall on its hilltop perch while overlooking a picturesque town below—a testament to both architectural grandeur and human resilience amidst adversity.
