H.M.S. "Antelope" at Fernando Po - Election of a New Sovereign, 1854. The [Antelope], during her late visit to the different rivers in the Bight of Biafra, took a somewhat unexpected share in the administrative affairs of this part of South [sic] Africa...At the [River] Bonny the Antelope found fourteen merchant vessels, trading in palm-oil, which was stopped, in consequence of a series of aggressions committed by King Pepple upon his subjects...and owing to his determination to go to war with the new Calabar people. On the 12th December last the whole of them revolted, leaving the trade of the river very unsettled. On the 19th January the vessel, with Mr. Beecroft, her Majesty's Consul, on board, arrived, and not being able to bring them to an amicable understanding, Pepple was considered deposed; and Prince Dappo [a nephew of] Pepple, was formally elected in his place...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts the H.M.S. Antelope anchored at Fernando Po, a small island off the coast of present-day Equatorial Guinea, in 1854. The British naval vessel played an unexpected role in the political affairs of the region during its visit to the Bight of Biafra. At the River Bonny, the Antelope encountered fourteen merchant vessels trading in palm-oil, which had been halted due to King Pepple's aggressions against his subjects. King Pepple's determination to go to war with the new Calabar people had left the river's trade in disarray. On January 19, 1854, the Antelope, with Mr. Beecroft, Her Majesty's Consul, on board, arrived at the scene. Despite efforts to reach an amicable resolution, King Pepple refused to back down, leading to his deposition. Prince Dappo, a nephew of Pepple, was formally elected as his successor in a ceremony witnessed by the Antelope's crew and British consul. This photograph serves as a testament to the complex political dynamics of the region during the mid-19th century and the role of British naval presence in shaping the power structures of the African coast. The H.M.S. Antelope's intervention in the election of a new sovereign at River Bonny highlights the intricate web of diplomacy, trade, and power that characterized the colonial era in Africa.
