Eight Hours at the Sea-Side - drawn by John Leech, 1856. Creator: Unknown
Eight Hours at the Sea-Side - drawn by John Leech, 1856. Whit-Monday Bank Holiday on Brighton Beach. Great credit is due to the managers of the South Coast Railway for their determination to supply to the labourers of mind and body the means of breathing for eight hours at least the invigorating sea-breeze, and to give change to the mind deadened by the association from week's end to week's end with brick walls, or whizzing wheels, or blazing furnaces, or other implements of labour. We do not know at what charge this holiday is procurable; but it seems to be so valued that those who use it are to be reckoned by thousands'. Note bathing machine for ladies in the background. EDITORS COMMENTS
a captivating 1856 drawing by John Leech published in the "Illustrated London News," depicts a lively scene of working-class families enjoying their Whit-Monday Bank Holiday on Brighton Beach in East Sussex, England. The image showcases the determination of the South Coast Railway to provide laborers with a much-needed respite from their monotonous workweek, offering them a chance to breathe in the rejuvenating sea breeze and escape the confines of brick walls, whizzing wheels, or blazing furnaces. The print captures the essence of a day out by the sea, with people of all ages and genders dressed in 19th-century apparel, including men in top hats and women in dresses, enjoying a leisurely picnic on the sand. Children playfully frolic in the shallow waters, while others explore the rocky shoreline, collecting seaweed and pebbles. In the background, a bathing machine for ladies can be seen, indicating the presence of more refined bathing practices for the upper classes. The boats and rowing boats in the foreground add to the sense of adventure and relaxation, as holidaymakers take advantage of the opportunity to travel and explore the coastal waters. The overall scene exudes a feeling of joy and relief from the daily grind, highlighting the importance of leisure and relaxation during a time when work dominated most people's lives. This evocative drawing by John Leech offers a glimpse into the past, providing a window into the social fabric of Victorian Britain and the value placed on holidays and days out by the working class. The print remains a testament to the enduring appeal of the seaside as a popular destination for relaxation and recreation.
