Indian Deities - Suraswati, the Hindoo Goddess of Learning, Music and Poetry, 1858. Creator: W. B

Indian Deities - Suraswati, the Hindoo Goddess of Learning, Music and Poetry, 1858. She is always invoked at the marriage ceremonies of the Brahmins. She was the wife of Brahma, the Creator...She is also called Vachi, Lepita, Vani, Brahmi, or Brahmani...When a Hindoo lies or commits perjury (two very common occurrences) he makes an oblation to this goddess, and conceives that he will be held blameless in consequence. In the sacred books of the Hindoos, telling falsehoods and the bearing of false evidence are recommended as virtues. The very gods of the Hindoos are represented as liars. Suraswati is the Minerva of the Greeks. The following particulars respecting the goddess Suraswati are from Stocqueler's "Oriental Interpreter": "She is also called Bharadi, the Goddess of History. She is sometimes seen as a white woman standing on a lotus, or water-lily, holding a lute (or vina) in her hand, to show that she is also the Goddess of Music; at others, riding on a peacock, with the same emblem in her hand...[During] the annual festival of Suraswati...she is worshipped with offerings of perfumes, flowers, and rice; and the Hindoos abstain from either reading or writing, as they ascribe the power of doing both to be derivable from the goddess". From "Illustrated London News", 1858

EDITORS COMMENTS
"This photograph print depicts Suraswati, the revered Hindu Goddess of Learning, Music, and Poetry, as depicted in 1858. Suraswati, also known as Saraswati, is an essential deity in Hindu mythology, often invoked during marriage ceremonies among the Brahmins. She is believed to be the wife of Brahma, the Creator. Suraswati holds various names such as Vachi, Lepita, Vani, Brahmi, or Brahmani. In Hindu culture, Suraswati is also invoked when a person lies or commits perjury, a common occurrence in their society. The Hindus believe that by making an oblation to this goddess, they will be absolved of their deceit. The sacred texts of the Hindus encourage the telling of falsehoods and the bearing of false evidence as virtues, and even the gods themselves are depicted as liars. Suraswati is often compared to the Greek goddess Minerva. In Hindu mythology, she is portrayed as a white woman standing on a lotus or water-lily, holding a lute (or vina) in her hand, symbolizing her role as the Goddess of Music. At other times, she is depicted riding on a peacock, with the same emblem in her hand. During the annual festival of Suraswati, she is worshipped with offerings of perfumes, flowers, and rice. The Hindus abstain from reading or writing during this festival, attributing their ability to do so to the goddess's power." This photograph print, taken in 1858, provides a fascinating glimpse into the rich cultural traditions and mythology of Hinduism. It offers an insight into the significance of Suraswati, the Goddess of Learning, Music, and Poetry, in Hindu society and highlights her multifaceted role as a deity.
