Inhabitants of Kamchatka, 19th century. Creators: Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz, Victor Adam, Jean Louis Tirpenne

Inhabitants of Kamchatka, 19th century. One of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out in 1826-29 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke (the Russian version of the name of Count Friedrich Lu¨tke, a Baltic German). The expedition began in Kronstadt (the main imperial Russian naval base near Saint Petersburg where Russian circumnavigations typically began and ended); it then traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. This voyage was one of many Russian scientific naval surveys in the first part of the 19th century

EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph, titled 'Inhabitants of Kamchatka' by Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz, Victor Adam, and Jean Louis Tirpenne, is an intriguing snapshot of daily life in the far-off Kamchatka Peninsula during the 19th century. Commissioned for the Russian edition of the maps published after the historic round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin, this expedition was led by Captain Fedor Litke under the patronage of Tsar Nicholas I. The image portrays four individuals, two men and two women, from the indigenous Kamchatkan community, standing in a forest clearing. The men are dressed in furs and carrying axes, while the women are adorned with traditional headdresses and jewelry. The encounter between the explorers and the local inhabitants represents the meeting of two distinct frontiers, a theme that was prevalent during the era of extensive geographical discoveries. This lithograph, one of 65 such prints, is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the time. The artists, Adam Victor and Jean Louis Tirpenne, skillfully captured the essence of the Kamchatkan people and their environment, providing a valuable historical record for future generations. The image, reminiscent of the 19th-century aesthetic, adds to its timeless appeal. The Library of Congress in Washington D.C. is the current custodian of this precious piece of art and history, which continues to inspire and educate visitors about the remarkable voyages of exploration and discovery that shaped our understanding of the world.
