John Gilpins horse is alarmed by a donkey, 1878, (c1918). Creator: Randolph Caldecott
John Gilpins horse is alarmed by a donkey, 1878, (c1918). John Gilpin, newly hatted and wigged thanks to his friend, is about to set off again when a braying donkey frightens his horse. Gilpin was the subject of a comic ballad of 1782 by William Cowper entitled " The Diverting History of John Gilpin". The ballad, based on real-life character, describes how, on a journey to Edmonton (north in London), Gilpin, a draper, became separated from his wife and children after losing control of his horse, and ended up in the town of Ware, ten miles away from his intended destination. From " The Diverting History of John Gilpin", by William Cowper. [Frederick Warne and Co. London & New York, c1918]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a humorous moment from the comic ballad "The Diverting History of John Gilpin" by William Cowper. Created by Randolph Caldecott in 1878, this particular scene shows John Gilpin, newly hatted and wigged thanks to his friend, preparing to set off on his journey once again. However, just as he is about to depart, a braying donkey startles his horse, causing panic and alarm. John Gilpin's misadventures were based on a real-life character and became popular in 18th-century Britain. In the ballad, Gilpin, a draper traveling to Edmonton in London with his family, loses control of his horse along the way. As a result, he ends up in Ware instead of reaching his intended destination. Caldecott's illustration perfectly captures the chaos and humor of this moment. The vibrant colors bring life to the countryside setting while highlighting the frightened expressions on both John Gilpin's face and that of his alarmed horse. This print not only showcases Caldecott's artistic talent but also serves as a reminder of the enduring popularity of William Cowper's ballad.
