EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Johnny King, the renowned British boxer of the 1930s. Born in 1912 and leaving a lasting legacy until his untimely death in 1963, King's boxing career was nothing short of remarkable. Competing primarily as a flyweight and later transitioning to bantamweight, he fought an astonishing total of 225 times. With an impressive record of 149 wins, 49 losses, and 14 draws, King's talent was undeniable. In 1932, he secured both the British and British Empire bantamweight titles by defeating Dick Corbett on points. The following year saw him face Panama Al Brown in a world title bout which ended in defeat but showcased his tenacity. King engaged in two more intense battles with Corbett for the British and Empire bantamweight belts - losing one fight but drawing the other. However, he reclaimed the vacant British title in 1935 after triumphing over Len Hampston on points. While unsuccessful in his attempt to win the British featherweight championship in 1936, King successfully defended his bantamweight title throughout both 1937 and 1938. The coveted belt remained firmly within King's possession until his final fight against Jackie Paterson in1947 when he suffered a knockout blow that marked the end of an era. This Churchmans Cigarettes picture card immortalizes Johnny King as a true sports personality whose dedication to boxing made him a celebrated figure not only within Britain but also across international arenas.
