EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking oil painting, created by the renowned Swedish artist Axel Sparre in the 18th century, depicts King Carl XII of Sweden, also known as Charles XII (1682-1718). The portrait was painted in 1715, during the final years of the king's reign. Carl XII is shown leaning on his elbow, looking away from the viewer with a thoughtful expression. He is dressed in the fashionable attire of the time, wearing a red coat with gold trim and a white waistcoat, as well as a black breeches and a knee-length riding boots. The king is also wearing a white shirt with a lace jabot and a black cravat, and he is holding a sword in his right hand. The background of the painting is simple, with a plain wall and a window frame providing a subtle contrast to the richly detailed foreground. The king's attire and accessories, including his gloves and the hilt of his sword, are depicted with great care and attention to detail. The painting also reveals some clues about Carl XII's religious beliefs, as he was a Protestant monarch, with a Lutheran faith. Carl XII was the last monarch of the House of Palatinate-Zweibrucken to rule Sweden. He is best known for his military campaigns against Russia and Poland, which ended in his defeat and death in the Battle of Fredriksten in 1718. This painting is now part of the collection of the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Sweden, and it is a valuable reminder of the rich artistic and historical heritage of the country.
