EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving is a tribute to the late Admiral Sir Baldwin Walker (1792-1876), a distinguished naval officer who entered the Royal Navy at the tender age of 10 in 1812. His dedication to his country's service lasted for over two decades, until his retirement in 1838. Following his retirement, Walker was appointed as the Surveyor of the Navy and served as one of Queen Victoria's naval aides-de-camp. During the 1840s, Walker played a significant role in the Ottoman naval forces, participating in the attack on Beyrut and the bombardment of St. Jean d'Acre. His services were highly regarded by Admiral Sir Robert Stopford. In 1848, Walker was appointed as the Surveyor of the Navy, and during the 1850s, he was responsible for the Royal Navy's warship construction programme during the naval arms race and the introduction of the Ironclad warship. This portrait, created by Messrs. Maull and Co. from a photograph, captures the image of a seasoned naval officer with a distinguished beard and a stern gaze. The engraving, published in the Illustrated London News in 1876, serves as an obituary to a man who dedicated his life to the service of his country and left an indelible mark on naval history.
