EDITORS COMMENTS
"This portrait depicts the late Reverend George Croly, LL.D., an eminent poet, writer, and divine, who began his academic journey at Trinity College in Dublin at the tender age of fourteen. After completing his studies, he was ordained by Bishop O'Byrne of Meath and commenced a small curacy in Ireland. However, his calling led him to London, where he secured the position of dramatic critic for the New Times. He later became a prolific contributor to various newspapers such as the Britannia, Standard, and Herald. At one point, he served as the editor of the Universal Review and was a regular contributor to Blackwood's and other magazines. In 1847, Dr. Croly was appointed as the Afternoon Preacher at the Foundling Hospital, where he devoted his time to spreading the word and providing solace to those in need. Tragically, Dr. Croly's life was cut short in a sudden and unexpected manner on the 24th of November, 1860. While walking in Holborn, he collapsed and succumbed to a disease of the heart. On the previous Saturday, the reverend gentleman's remains were laid to rest in the Church of St. Stephen's, Walbrook, where he had served as Rector for over twenty-five years." This photograph is a poignant reminder of the life and accomplishments of a man who dedicated his time and talents to spreading the word of God and sharing his literary gifts with the world. The late Reverend George Croly, LL.D., may no longer be with us, but his legacy continues to inspire and uplift those who encounter his works.
